Many people do not know their birth time. Some were never told, some have a family story that says "early morning", some have a certificate that was filled in hours later. Most chart software handles this by silently assuming 12:00. The chart that comes out looks complete. A large part of it is fiction.
Here is what actually depends on the time, and how much.
What moves fast, and therefore is lost
The ascendant and the houses. The ascendant crosses a whole sign in about two hours and moves roughly one degree every four minutes. With no birth time, all twelve ascendants are possible. Every statement that depends on houses goes with it: "Saturn in your tenth", "Venus rules your seventh". None of it can be said.
The midheaven, and astrocartography. Same reason. Location lines are drawn from the angles; without the angles there are no lines.
Human Design and Gene Keys. The type, authority and profile depend on the full set of activations, including the Moon and the exact line of the Sun. A gate spans 5°37′30″ and a line just under one degree. The Moon crosses a line in under two hours. With an unknown time the chart cannot be given, and a profile quoted from a noon chart is a guess.
The BaZi hour pillar. The hour pillar changes every two hours of true solar time. Without it you have three pillars out of four. The day pillar itself can flip for births close to midnight.
The solar return. It is cast for an exact moment and its houses are the point of it.
What moves slowly, and therefore survives
The Sun, and every planet from Mercury outward. The Sun moves about one degree a day; the outer planets barely move at all. Their signs, their aspects to each other, their dignities and retrograde status are reliable on almost any day of the year, in both zodiacs. The exception is a planet changing sign on the day itself, in which case we say so.
Transits to those planets. Timing work built on Saturn or Jupiter crossing your natal planets remains sound, because both ends of the contact are known to within a fraction of a degree.
Numerology. It uses your name and date only.
The BaZi year, month and, usually, day pillars.
The in-between case: the Moon
The Moon moves about 13° a day. Without a time, its position is known only to within about six degrees either side of noon. Often that is enough to fix the sign. It is frequently enough to fix the nakshatra, the 13°20′ lunar mansion Vedic astrology relies on, but not always, and rarely enough to fix its quarter.
This matters more than it seems, because the Vedic dasha calendar is computed from the Moon’s exact position. One degree of lunar error shifts the dasha dates by between five months and a year and a half, depending on the period. With an unknown time, dasha periods can still be named, but their boundaries must be given as ranges, not as dates. Any reading that gives you a dasha change "on the 14th" from a timeless chart is overstating what it knows.
What an honest reading does
It declares the uncertainty at the top. It prints which layers were computed and which were dropped, and why. It computes the Moon at the start and at the end of the birth day and shows you both. It gives date ranges where ranges are all the data supports. And it does not invent a time.
If you want the time back
Birth-time rectification works backwards from dated events in your life, testing candidate times until the angles and the dasha boundaries line up with what happened. It is slow, manual, and inferential: the honest output is a retained window with a confidence level, not a promised minute. It is worth doing only if you want the layers listed above. For timing work on the planets, you do not need it.
Start without it
The free reading accepts "unknown" as an answer. You get what is computable, clearly separated from what is not.
